Welcome to Alter Ego!

Alter Ego Costume Design & Rental is owned and operated by Christy Sullivan of Chico, California. We have 5,000 sq. ft. of vintage clothes, formal wear, & theatrical-quality costumes and costume accessories. Our costumes are available for rental, but should you find that we do not have the costume you are looking for, we are also skilled in custom costume design for purchase or rental, and we specialize in Historical recreations.

We are different from other costume shops, because we not only have more inventory than any other costume shop for hundreds of miles in any direction, but we also take the time to provide our patrons with hands-on, personal service. We provide "everything but the underwear"! We make it our goal to have you looking your absolute best (or worst, as the case may be) when you walk out our door. We aren't satisfied unless you look as good as we can make you.

How Can We Help?

The more information we have, the better we can help you. Where you're going and what you're doing makes a big difference in what you're wearing, so please keep in mind that we do ask a lot of questions. If you know what you want to dress up as, bringing a photo or drawing helps a lot, especially if you want to be a character from a movie or TV. If you don't know what you want to be, visit our List of Costumes - but keep in mind it's a partial list, because there's no way we could list every single possible costume! Some of our customers also found our Photo Gallery helpful for deciding on a costume.

After 21 years in the costume business, we've accumulated a lot of clothing. We have such a large inventory, some items distinguish themselves as popular, while others are left by the wayside. We have tons of vintage clothing that, while in good shape, are better suited for everyday wear than costume wear. To meet our goal of moving to a smaller facility in the near future, we are selling some of our Vintage Clothing to the public. We have styles from the 40s through the 90s available.

We go to a handful of Northern California renaissance faires every year, where we sell childrens' fantasy and renaissance costumes. We have princess dresses, prince outfits, knights, Robin Hood, pirates, and fairies in all shapes, sizes, and colors. We have a small selection available online in our Etsy shop, but if you'd like to see everything, please visit our shop.

Alter Ego Costumes is located at 249 Meyers St., Chico, CA 95928.
Driving directions are available courtesy of Google Maps.
Our hours are 12pm - 6pm Monday to Saturday.
Please arrive at least a half-hour before we close if you want to get fitted. We prefer to see large groups of people outside normal shop hours; please call 2 - 3 days in advance to set up an appointment.
